These entities run events based on their unique levels of “Aura,” at a rate set by their “aggravation,” at an intensity set by their “power.” Spirits can be Good or Evil, or Neutral, and the types of events they create reflect these Aura alignments.
The punchline is that every spirit eventually manifests as a powerful boss, which players may seek to eliminate for the sake of self defense, fun, or because killing these bosses is worth a lot of money. Every time a Spirit Boss is slain by a player, that invisible, unknowable entity disappears forever, and its Aura is subtracted from its slayer.
The financial incentive to eliminate Spirits drives fluxuations in Aura that bring about all sorts of Spirits, each with their own events and challenges. Every Spirit type also has a suite of unique flora and fauna that it brings into its dwelling, telegraphing its type to the observant player.
