MinedHype SMP is a chill public survival server that has been running for years. It is mostly vanilla so it feels like normal Minecraft but on a big world with other players.
There is no pay to win and there is no money plugin. You protect your stuff using land claims and grief is only allowed if the area is not claimed. CoreProtect is used so the staff can see what happened if something goes wrong.
The server runs on Minecraft 1.21.11 and supports both Java and Bedrock in the same world. There is no whitelist so you can just join and start playing. The overworld and nether are long term and are not planned to reset which is awesome if you like building big bases.
You spawn randomly inside a big area and you can use rtp to teleport even farther to find a good spot then set a home. There is also a public shopping district that anyone can apply to build in so players can trade using their own system.
The server has an online map you can view and there are free events with prizes. Chat reports are disabled and the rules and extra info are on their website so you can read everything before you join.

Paragon SMP is a small vanilla Java server that uses simple voice chat and nothing else. It feels like classic Minecraft but you can actually talk to people nearby. The world is 20k by 20k so there is a ton of space to explore and build.
Keep inventory is off so dying really matters here. You have to be careful when you go mining or exploring. People can build secret bases with their teams and then go up against other groups. Griefing is allowed but it is supposed to be more about stealing and small damage not blowing everything to bits.
The end is not open yet. It will be opened later so everyone can do a big end fight together. The server is whitelisted and has 20 player slots so it stays pretty tight and not super crowded. Right now it has 2 members.
The server runs on version 1.21.11. The community is LGBTQ friendly so it feels safe and welcoming for different people. Spawn is kind of bad but that almost makes it funny and you just run off to make your own place anyway.

EMBERLINE SMP is a small survival server that only wants 20 players total. The owner is tired of huge servers with like a hundred people and also tired of servers that never even start.
This server is mostly vanilla but it does have proximity chat. There is a tutorial for how to install that in the discord so everyone can talk in game by distance. It also has one player sleep so nights go by fast and it has player head drops for extra fun and trophies.
The plan is to start the world as soon as the discord hits 20 people. That will be the full player list so it will feel like a tight group instead of a giant random crowd. You join the discord and send in an application if you want to be part of it.
If you like simple survival and you want a server that actually starts and does not get flooded with players this one is trying to be that kind of place.

WhimsyWillow SMP is a small community server and it is on season 3 right now. This season is modded and all the mods were picked by the community so it feels really player driven.
The world has over 100 biomes because it uses Biomes O Plenty and Terratonic. There are tons of places to explore and a bunch of structures to find. Progression is more fun because there are more ores plus new tools and weapons.
The Create mod is a big part of the server. You can build all kinds of machines as long as they are reasonable and not crazy broken. There is also Bluemap so you can look at a world map and see the whole place and plan your builds or travels.
Spawn is kept really nice and pretty and there is a shop district where players can make custom shops and sell whatever they want. The server staff and players like taking suggestions. They try to keep everything balanced fair and enjoyable for everyone.
They also run events every now and then to keep the server feeling alive and more fun. There is even an event going on right now. Everyone is welcome here and they are always looking for new people to hang out and play with.
To join you just apply for the whitelist with a short application on their discord. It is pretty simple and then you can hop in and play.

LoungeSMP is a semi vanilla survival smp that is made for chill long term players. The world is permanent and the owner already paid for a year so people can actually commit without worrying about resets.
The server is focused on survival and has a community driven smp vibe. Players get jobs and can claim land so there is no griefing. There are player shops too so people trade and build up their own little economy.
There are players from EU NA Asia and Oceania so there is usually someone online to hang out with. It feels like a relaxed place where people just want a clean survival experience and not a pay to win mess.
The end is opening and everyone is getting ready to fight the dragon and race for the dragon egg. All donations go back into the server which makes it feel fair and focused on the community.
