The World of Starknight is the oldest Xbox city server, now available on Java. Since 2012, the community has been building a grand city with its own economy and an intricate story mode experience. If city roleplay is not your style, you can jump into an MMO economy survival world instead. For players seeking a real challenge, there is also a hardcore apocalypse survival mode where you must fight through the ruins of a city and survive hordes of zombies with guns. Atropolis is a 16+ whitelisted Java server that is semi vanilla and community based and it recently opened. It is meant to feel like normal Minecraft but with extra stuff that makes playing smoother.
Phantoms are turned off and one person sleeping works. You can toggle PvP and there is a live dynamap web map so you can see what is going on. The server also has anti grief protections and rollbacks.
Keep inventory is on in the Nether and the End. At spawn you can use portals that go to the Nether and even the Nether roof.
There is Simple Voicechat and Elytra Trims plus things like a death counter head drops leadable villagers and renewable trial vaults. Voice chat and elytra trims are optional but they do need a client download if you want them.

Halcyon is a Lands PvP server with a serious medieval vibe and it stays on the latest vanilla Minecraft version 1.21.11. It was started by a postgraduate medievalist and it feels like old school survival with more danger and more mystery. The server is based in Australia and people also play from Europe the Americas and Asia.
The world is handmade and the rules are meant to make things harder and slow down progression. It pushes you away from exploit style play and makes creativity and teamwork matter more. Players win by doing brave stuff making deals building big churches and hidden groves and raising cities and fortresses then getting other players to follow them.
Travel is a big deal because there is no teleportation. Players make roads waystations and even secret underground railways to get around. Some crops and saplings only work in certain biomes so trading becomes important and regions start to feel different.
There is also a lot of mystery. You do not get a big wiki and instead you learn the world through a handbook at spawn plus tons of in game books written by players. This is a chill survival SMP where people mostly just want to build and relax. The rules are strict about no griefing and no stealing so your stuff is meant to stay safe.

There is an economy with player shops so you can make money and trade. There are weekly events and community builds so it feels active.
