    The Pen MC is a classic prison server that feels like the old 2014 style. It is barebones and grindy and it wants you to earn everything the slow way.

    There is no instasell and you actually smelt ores yourself. To sell you have to move through PVP zones so it feels risky and tense. The rank path goes A to H and then Parole.

    After you hit the top you can prestige and you can choose different ways to keep progressing. You can do the mining grind or go for custom fishing for money. You can also fight through a mob arena with boss waves for rewards. There is a bakery style cookie farming system with long term quests and leaderboards.

    It also has parole so you can leave prison and build farms. Guards enforce contraband rules and illegal crops are high risk. You can rent cells and plots and use auction house and bounties. There are player shops parkour challenges and solitary confinement. The paid stuff can also be earned in game so it is not just instant OP kits.

    I found Eternal Region SMP and it is a Java server on 1.21.11 for ages 16 and up. Season 3 is back and it goes for that classic SMP feel with a long term world.

    It plays mostly vanilla with small upgrades. You can run shops do PvE and only do PvP if both sides agree. They also do community events and they even vote on features and choices.

    Phantoms are turned off and you get phantom membrane from bats instead. Creepers and endermen cannot mess up your builds. The overworld has a 10k border so the world stays tight.

    They support Simple Voice Mod for in game chat. They also use CoreProtect so grief and theft can get handled fast. The server feels rules focused and community first.
