I found a small Towny and SMP server that feels really friendly and calm. The big rule is no griefing and no stealing so you can build without stress. They also say there are no resets ever so your stuff can stay for good.
It is chill but still kind of competitive in a casual way. The community is welcoming and people are around in AU EU and US timezones. At peak times they can get over 20 players so it does not feel empty.
It has Towny so you can build claim land and grow a town. There are jobs plus MCMMO and an in game ranking system. You also get dynmap and player warps with player shops and a sell only server shop. EchelonMC is a hand built survival server that was made from scratch and kept in active development. It is hosted in Canada and it has had about two months of work put into it so far. The owner builds it around player suggestions and over 100 of those ideas are already in.
This server is for long term building and real progression. It is not pay to win and the world is not planned to reset. It also is not trying to be a recycled server with copy paste systems.
There are custom coded systems like a currency you earn by just playing. Mining farming fishing exploring and building all help you earn it and you can spend it on progression and quality of life stuff.
Land claiming is a big deal here with visual borders and lots of settings. It can help stop raids and protect builds with controls for TNT creepers fire fluids and even mob spawning. You can also do things like chunk settings claim decay and claim bundling for big projects.

Minecraft Vanilla is a survival SMP that tries really hard to stay like classic Minecraft. It is about building and surviving with other players and letting the world get shaped by what people actually do.
There are no teleports so you will not see /home or /tpa. There are no kits and no perks and no scripted towns. There are also no land claims so the server uses CoreProtect to track griefing and they say punishments are strict.
You can use optional proximity voice chat with Simple Voice Chat. Players can make their own clans villages and cities without a plugin running everything.

Crown SMP is a fresh survival SMP that opens on March 20th and everyone starts at the same time. It already has a big Discord group and people ready to play on day one.
The server stays close to vanilla survival but it has a custom Crown plugin. If you wear the Crown you get 3 extra hearts and there are only 5 maces total on the whole server so finding rare stuff matters.
