This server feels like a big friend group that decided to make their own world. It is made by the players for the players and you can tell. People hang out and talk a lot and it is all about playing together and having fun.
The server runs on Minecraft 1.21.10 and it is Java only. It is whitelisted so you actually see the same people on a lot and everyone kind of knows each other. There are usually a few people on every day and a lot more who pop in and out over time.
The coolest thing is the proximity voice chat. You can talk in game based on how close you are to someone. There is also a map website so you can see the world. You can sit on stairs and slabs which makes builds feel more alive.
There is an economy with jobs. You can chop trees mine ores and do other stuff to earn money. Then you can unlock cosmetics and commands which makes grinding feel worth it. There is protection for your stuff and a rollback system if something goes wrong.
The server gets updated often with new features that the community suggests and votes on. So it feels like the players actually decide what happens next. You can even join without mods if you want since proximity chat is optional.
If you are looking for a community centered server that feels relaxed and social this one is pretty much that vibe.

Determinacy is a Minecraft server that is all about no rules and pure vanilla.
The world started in June 2020 and the idea is to keep it going for a really long time. It is not trying to be some huge server. It feels more like a world that just stays up so players can do whatever they want.
There are no rules here so PvE and PvP both just happen. You can play calm or you can fight other players and there is nobody stopping you. It feels like how Minecraft was first meant to be played with no limits from server owners.
The server runs on version 1.21.10 so you play with that and just jump in and survive however you can.

The New Life SMP is a survival server that tries really hard to feel like a real community and not just a world where everyone plays alone. When I joined it felt like every player mattered and people actually talked and worked together.
The server runs on version 1.21.10 for both Java and Bedrock. It has Simple Voice Chat so talking to other players is super easy and way more fun than just typing. The economy is run by the players so trading and shops feel important and not just extra stuff.
There are custom enchantments and balanced progression with armor upgrading templates so you still feel like you are moving forward but not instantly overpowered. No one is treated like they are better than anyone else and everyone is supposed to be on the same level.
They do monthly events and expand the world border so there is always something new to explore. The server is community driven and feels active and alive even outside the game.
Season 2 started recently so it is a good time to join early and grow with everyone from the start.

The Perch is a survival SMP that really tries to feel like a second home. It is not about drama or yelling. It is about people who just want a chill place to play Minecraft together.
The server has a survival feel so it does not try to bloat the game. When they add features they think about how it will affect your normal day in game. If you do not like a feature you can turn it off. Farms and redstone are meant to work like they do in normal Minecraft.
There is a ranking system based on playtime so you unlock perks just by playing a lot. There is also an economy with player run shops that is meant to be fair and balanced. They add small gameplay tweaks that just make things feel nicer without changing the core game.
The staff talks a lot with the community. They have suggestion spots tickets and feedback forms. They post weekly changelogs so you can see what changed and they run monthly events to bring everyone together.
The Perch is made for people who want a long term survival world with a kind community and very little toxicity or drama.

I found this server called The Tavern and it is a fresh vanilla SMP that started about a week ago. It already has a bunch of players and it can hit over twenty people online and still stay smooth with basically no lag.
The server is fully vanilla so it feels like normal Minecraft but with a lot of people around. They keep it up all the time so you can hop on whenever. There is a live map website you can look at and also a stats site so you can see things like how many blocks you placed.
They let redstone builds happen and they also allow things like litematica and minimaps. There are no server resets and there is no world border so you can just keep going and make big bases and farms without worrying it will all get wiped.
The community is really friendly and they do community projects and events. There is a Christmas tree building contest starting soon which sounds fun. It has a Hermitcraft style vibe with people working together but still doing their own thing. There is proximity voice chat so you can talk when you get close to other players in game which makes it feel more alive.
If you want a chill vanilla SMP with events and long term worlds this server fits that really well.
