I found a modded Minecraft server called Chaos Temple and it runs the Chaos and Magic edition modpack on 1.20.1.
It is all about magic and chaos with a big adventure feel. You can team up with friends to survive and build huge magical stuff while everything stays unpredictable.

I found Taerel Network and it feels like a dark fantasy survival server with its own custom modpacks. Each server has different modded biomes so the world can look alien and kind of creepy.
They have lore about finding a sealed gate and stepping into a place with stone portals under an azure sky. The first area is a small settlement with a copper roof hall and a little tower by a lake. Past the lantern light it gets dangerous and strange things move in the dark so it really pushes exploring with friends.
The server is focused on survival and exploration and the world has no resets so your progress stays. Staff are said to be friendly and active and the owner is around and ready to help.
It is whitelisted so you have to contact the owner to get approved before you can join.

This server is a Hardcore Plus survival world that stays really close to vanilla. There are no teleport commands and block damage is fully on so fire spreads and creepers can wreck stuff. Stealing and griefing are still not allowed so it is not anarchy.
The big twist is the health system. Every time you die you lose one heart until you hit a minimum of 3 hearts. You can craft a Heart Crystal using an echo shard and a diamond block to get one heart back. You can even go past 10 hearts up to 20 hearts with temporary hearts that get eaten first when you take damage.
It has quality of life plugins like 50 percent sleep player and mob heads armor stand tools and stat leaderboards. There is optional proximity voice chat and cross chat between in game and Discord.
BareBonesMP has been around since 2019 and it is aiming for that classic server feel with a close community. Events happen every weekend and there are mayor elections every month. The map was reset on Aug 10th 2025 and they also have a main vanilla SMP plus an optional cozy modded and unwhitelisted hardcore server.

Rattata SMP is a 16+ community survival server that tries to stay as close to vanilla as possible. It runs on Paper and it supports both Java and Bedrock players.
The rules are simple and it is mostly just do not grief and use common sense. There is no tp and there are no changed loot tables or custom world generation so it feels like basic vanilla.
It is set to hard difficulty and it has 33 percent player sleep. The server uses a whitelist and there is a live map. Simple Voice Mod is optional and CoreProtect is there with /co i to help with problems.
The server launched Dec 26th and you can apply to join.

This is a very vanilla survival world and it is not one of those big network servers with a bunch of modes.
It is a smaller SMP with a cap under 40 members so it feels more like a real group and not a crowd.
People record videos here and they want players who can help make lore and story moments. You have to apply with a written application and they want you to explain how you would add lore.
If you do not want to be a full member you can still join as an extra actor or player for videos. They also said they have another video recording coming up this week and they need more players and actors.
