The Anchor is a survival SMP that is trying really hard to treat players seriously and actually listen to feedback. It feels like the staff wants the community to help decide big changes so progress does not get messed up by surprise reworks.
When you join you can play normally or follow the server stuff if you like having more direction. There is a playtime based rank system with long gaps between ranks because the overworld will never reset. There is also a resource world that resets monthly.
Claims matter a lot here because builds are a top priority. Once you reach the second rank your claimed builds are permanent and claimed areas cannot be griefed.
There is also a tag system where you can earn keys by voting or using the vote shop. The crate can give you one of 42 unique tags that show next to your name. The server also has jobs and it supports a fresh economy with player shops.

I found Xapros SMP and it is a chill vanilla survival server made for adults. The community is 18 plus and it has players from lots of different places so someone is usually around.
This world is meant to last. It started in January 2025 and they say it will not reset. That makes it a good spot for big long term builds.
The server feels active with peak times around 20 to 25 players online. It also aims for strong performance and low lag and it runs on Fabric so redstone and farms act like singleplayer.
There are no land claims but griefing and theft are not allowed. There is a ledger inspect command so you can check what happened if stuff goes missing.
Spawn is built up and there is a diamond based shopping district. Travel is fast with Nether ice boat highways. You can also view the world on a live map. There are no world borders so you can go as far out as you want. It is free to play with no ranks or donation perks. I found a semi anarchy survival server that tries to keep things feeling like real vanilla Minecraft with only a few changes. It started on October 11th 2024 and it is hosted in New York City in the USA.
The server stays online all the time and it lets you join on Java versions from 1.7.2 up to 1.21.11. They recommend 1.21.10 so stuff works better.
The world is huge with a border set at 2 million blocks. There are no map resets and there is no pay to win. Griefing and PvP are allowed so it can get wild.
The only non vanilla command is spawn so players far away can get back to people. Nether roof access is allowed. Phantoms are removed and only half the players are needed to skip the night.
They still block some things like exploits and lag machines and duping and spam. They also do not allow harassment or racial slurs in chat.

SwiftSMP is a new SMP that is trying to keep things mostly vanilla and simple. It is made for people who want an active community and PvP that still feels fair.
At the start there is a 30 minute grace period and then PvP turns on. You are not allowed to grief or steal from chests so your base and builds are meant to be respected. If you kill someone you are allowed to loot what they drop.
The world starts fresh with a 100×100 border so players run into each other early. Later on the border expands as the season goes on. The server also has a voting system where the community decides if the next season is Vanilla or Lifesteal.
