Twigland is an SMP where you start off just trying to survive and chill with the community.
People build bases and grind for better gear but there is also this underground crop plugin that can turn normal farming into big money.
That is when the server gets spicy. Players hide farms out in the wilderness and move stuff at night. Some people even pay strong grinders for protection.
It turns into economy drama fast. Shop owners get mad. PvP towns start paying attention. Even mayors get suspicious when someone gets rich too quick.
It feels like normal survival until you realize everyone has a secret hustle.

I found Eternal Region SMP and it is a Java server on 1.21.11 for ages 16 and up. Season 3 is back and it goes for that classic SMP feel with a long term world.
It plays mostly vanilla with small upgrades. You can run shops do PvE and only do PvP if both sides agree. They also do community events and they even vote on features and choices.
Phantoms are turned off and you get phantom membrane from bats instead. Creepers and endermen cannot mess up your builds. The overworld has a 10k border so the world stays tight.
They support Simple Voice Mod for in game chat. They also use CoreProtect so grief and theft can get handled fast. The server feels rules focused and community first.

Awesome SMP 2 is a fresh Lifesteal SMP where fights actually matter because you can gain hearts by eliminating other players. It is meant to feel mostly vanilla and not like some huge modpack.
It only uses a couple mods to keep things simple. There is a voice chat mod so you can talk in proximity and that makes random encounters and fights way funnier. It also has JEI so crafting is easier to figure out.
The server is competitive but still supposed to be fun. There are streamers and regular players so people can make content start wars build alliances or just grind and survive. The world is new so everyone starts equal and the owner says events are planned.

LazyCraft is a chill survival SMP I found that really sticks to the no paywalls idea. It is 100 percent free to play and it tries to keep a semi vanilla survival feel while still giving you a lot of helpful commands.
The world is made for long term play. The overworld is huge and the nether and end are claimable. There are also resettable resource worlds in every dimension so you can keep gathering stuff.
PvP is off in the overworld unless you go to the spots where it is allowed. Phantoms are also turned off everywhere which is honestly nice.
Building feels safe because there are strict no grief rules and you can claim land. You can fly inside your claims and start with free sethomes. You can also make towns with Lands and set up player warps.
The economy is mostly player driven. You can sell ores to a server shop. You can trade with players and use the auction house. You can also make unlimited chest shops and there is a special world just for player shops.
For quality of life you get things like feed repair trash and condense without needing ranks. There are craftable mob catchers plus tree feller with auto replant. You also start with player vaults.
The community is small but active with about 10 online during the day and 10 plus regular daily players. The owner actually listens to suggestions and adds new features. It supports Java and Bedrock 1.21.11.

GOOMB SMP is a vanilla survival server set in an amplified world. The map was reset about two months ago so it still feels pretty fresh and lots of people are building new bases.
At first the world border made everyone live close together but it has expanded so there is more room now for big plans and separate bases. The End is open and players have even been doing an egg hunt event so people can meet and interact.
The community is super active with players advertising shops sharing terrain screenshots and making trade deals. Voice chats are often full of people just hanging out and talking about what they want to build.

It has some nice gameplay tweaks like dragon damage tracking in chat. Mob spawns scale with how many players are on and there are per player mob caps so other people do not mess up your farms. Phantoms are optional and you can toggle them.
