This is a chill modded SMP that feels like vanilla but with extra stuff. It is built around Origins so you get custom abilities and different ways to play. It started as a friend group server and now they are letting more people in with a simple form application.
The seasons on the server are long so your builds and projects actually stick around. They run events and use polls so players can help decide what happens next. There is in game voice chat and paint mods which makes hanging out and building together feel more fun.
The community seems pretty established and it is very friendly to LGBT and neurodivergent players. They also have heart trading which makes health feel more valuable and kind of risky but interesting.
The server is on Java v1.21.1 and they even have channels for content promotion so people who stream or make videos can share what they do.

This is a new SMP server that is being built by an 18 plus community. The owner wants a small group of active players who like Minecraft a lot and sometimes play other games together too.
The server is not set up yet because everyone who joins helps decide how it will work. People will vote on mods and modpacks and rules and new features. It is meant to be a real community run server where every player gets a voice.
The main focus is making friends and playing survival together and doing special events like Chained Mod and Shared Inventory and other ideas the group comes up with. PvP is only if everyone agrees so it is not a hardcore pvp or griefing place.

EchelonMC is a fully custom SMP that tries to feel different from all the usual copy paste survival servers. The owner uses custom coded features and listens to player feedback so the server keeps getting updated and changed.
The server has auto pathing that lets you create paths just by walking and you get a speed bonus when you use them. You can turn this on or off. There is a currency called Echelites that you earn just by playing and you can spend it on progression and utilities.
Land claiming is more advanced than normal. You can see visual borders and set things per chunk like anti grief options mob settings TNT fire spread raids and fluid protection. There are public chunks where people can publish their builds for others to visit and they can earn from visitors and climb rankings.
You can also make teams invite your friends show off team nametags and use team utilities. When you die a grave spawns with your items for a limited time and you can use back to help recover after teleports.
The server has voting with rewards and a spawn hub with custom NPCs and useful stuff. Discord chat is linked in game and there are anti X ray protections. Everything is made to be non pay to win and built to evolve with the community.

ShovelCraft is a semi vanilla SMP that is all about building and long stories instead of rushing to the end.
The server world is split into two main zones. In the Green Zone you cannot do pvp or steal or grief. There are no generated structures there and it is all about building towns trading and making lore together. In the Red Zone pvp is on and stealing is allowed and normal structures can generate so it feels more dangerous but you still are not supposed to just grief everything.
The End is turned off so there are no elytras or shulker farms. People travel by land or on water or through the Nether so the world feels bigger and slower. The world is meant to last a long time with no planned resets so your builds and stories can stay.
There is a diamond based economy and a team system. Teams can level up by using diamonds and that unlocks extra perks like more warps shared storage and more member slots. There are also seasonal competitions that give lore themed rewards like armor trims and shulker boxes.
The gameplay is mostly vanilla but there are some small quality of life things like home tpa duel and shops. There is no pay to win and no special donor perks. Voice chat is optional if you want to talk instead of just type.
The server runs on version 1.21.10 and supports both Java and Bedrock so more people can join together.

This is a small vanilla plus SMP called Lillias Goons. It just started last week so it still feels really fresh but people already have some stuff going on.
There are around 15 active players and most of them already know each other. Everyone seems pretty experienced with the game and they care a lot about farms and community projects. If you join they expect you to help with building farms and doing group builds and events instead of just hiding alone.
The server is semi private and they only take new members through a short application. You need to be at least 16 years old and they would really prefer if you are 18 or older.
It is a vanilla plus style SMP with support for both Java and Bedrock players. So you can join no matter which edition you use as long as you want a chill but active group to play with.

RigoloSMP is a vanilla style SMP that has been around for about three years. It went offline for a while and now it is back with a mini season. The world border is smaller right now and is about 3072 by 3072. It grows every Friday. Next season will go back to a normal border.
The server uses a few plugins like simple voice chat custom music discs custom goat horns squaremap and co inspect. None of these change the base game so it still feels like regular Minecraft. Donator perks are also not pay to win and for this mini season they are free.
The server used to hit around 50 players and they are trying to get that active community back. The current season really needs more players. The person talking about it even started as a normal player and is now a manager so it seems like the staff come from the community.
If you want a simple vanilla feeling SMP with a small world that slowly expands this server is trying hard to start up again and get new people.

Scarce SMP is a really hard Minecraft world with a three life system. When you die you do not just respawn like normal. You get set back one life and if you lose all three lives you are banned from the server for good.
Resources on this server are super limited. Ores villagers and structures are not easy to find. It is not the same boring three day grind that other worlds have. You actually have to think before you mine or fight.
The whole idea is to make the game feel fresh and challenging. It breaks the usual repeat cycle and makes every player try their best. If you like pressure and risk this server will probably feel fun and scary at the same time.
They are only accepting one hundred members so it is a pretty limited community and not just a random public server.

This is a small modded SMP that is doing a special randomizer weekend.
For the event all block drops and mob drops are completely random. It starts at 6pm EST and goes until 6pm EST on Sunday evening. So the whole weekend is just chaos and surprises.
The server feels friendly and chill and they want more people to just come hang out and play together. If you like random loot and weird moments this server is pretty fun.
There are rules and a way to get autowhitelisted that you have to read first but it all seems simple and fair.

Veigars SMP is a german semi vanilla SMP. It has a few mods that just give quality of life so the game still feels like normal Minecraft.
The server is seasonal and it is inspired by Hermitcraft. So it is about playing together for a season and building up a cool world.
It runs with Neoforge in version 1.21. The owners are hosting a server for the first time so the project feels fresh.

The New Life SMP is a vanilla plus survival server that does not use a bunch of extra commands. There is no TPA or home or enderchest commands so gameplay feels more real and players actually have to travel and explore.
The server supports both Java and Bedrock players on version 1.21 up to 1.21.11 so a lot of people can join. It has been getting popular with around 20 to 30 players online on weekends and sometimes even on weekdays.
From what I see the community is really kind and friendly. People talk using Simple Voicechat which makes everything feel more immersive and it is easier to make friends and work together.
To join you need to fill out a whitelist application. It might take a little effort but the owner is really proud of the community and wants to keep it safe and nice for everyone. If you want a simple vanilla plus SMP with a good vibe this server looks perfect.
