This server is a friendly place with active players who just like playing together and having a good time.
It is cross play so Java and Bedrock players can join the same world. The gameplay stays mostly vanilla and only adds a few quality of life things like proximity chat and vein miner plus McMMO.
The server stays on the latest Java version and it also lets older clients connect. It is heavily moderated so griefing is almost not a thing.

ArcticMC is a new survival server that started just a couple days ago. It is an SMP with Towny and faction style play so you can build a town and claim land then make allies or fight over territory.
PVP matters here but it is meant to stay fair since there is an honor system and it is explained in their Discord rules. The server also uses McMMO so you level up skills while you play like mining and combat and you can unlock special abilities.
It has custom items and they even have furniture that is entity based. They also use Tectonic world generation so the terrain has big mountains and nice valleys and it feels more realistic.
The community vibe is calm and friendly and more about chilling and exploring than pure chaos.

I found a Minecraft server that mixes Towny with classic survival so it feels different but still easy to understand.
You can build a town and grow it with other players. The economy is based on emeralds and you can get them by trading with villagers. There are player shops too so it turns into a real trading game.

Malgazar SMP is a chill survival server where people actually care about your builds and do not just wreck everything. It runs on 1.21.11 and it is hosted in the UK on Purpur. There are QOL extras too like keep inventory and vein mining.
The main vibe is friendly and pretty active and there are usually around 13 players online with about 400 total players around. Most players live near the hub area around -1k -1k so it feels like a real neighborhood.
Rules are strict about griefing stealing scamming slurs xray cheats seed maps duping and drama. PvP is only if both people agree and you are not allowed to mess with other peoples pets. If you break rules you can get locked in a cage for a while or banned.
Explosions do not destroy blocks and the world border is set at 15k. Outer end islands reset every week. There is mcmmo style rankings for stuff like mining and sword and there is also a mod that can track who touched blocks and undo grief fast.

This server is a 1 to 750 scale Earth with an alternate 1940s vibe where zeppelins never went away and the whole world is the battlefield.
You claim land and build up a nation using Towny. People make alliances then declare war and try to take towns with SiegeWar. There is no arena stuff. fights happen right on the world map for territory.
The cool part is the flying and naval warfare. You can pilot custom zeppelins and warships with Movecraft. Dogfights happen over continents. You can blockade ports and even carpet bomb fortifications.
You can also grind resources and trade to get stronger. There are player shops plus mcMMO for skills. Combat uses custom weapons plus Cannons and Movecraft Combat so wars feel strategic and heavy.
It runs on version 1.21.11 and it has a live map you can view. You can hide yourself from it with the dynmap hide command. The discord works like the forums and all are welcome.

SurviviaSMP is a survival server that tries to feel fresh by using custom terrain in every dimension so you are not stuck with the same old vanilla views.
I saw that it has custom structures too and you have to travel over 10000 blocks from spawn to find the rare ones so exploring actually matters.
It also runs Slimefun so there are lots of extra items and machines and a long progression path. There is a skills system where you level up and unlock abilities. Trading works from anywhere and it even lets you trade XP.
Quality of life stuff is on like /tpa and /home. You can summon a personal horse and there is in game voice chat. They also say there are daily events and updates and they are trying to grow an active survival community.

Realm of Thrones is a small crossplay SMP that is all about building civilizations and getting involved with the community.
You can build a kingdom and level it up over time. You can try to become the strongest empire and fight other groups that want PvP. Peaceful nations can still matter because you can trade with them and team up to take down enemies.
There is a money and playtime ranking system so you can rise through the ranks and unlock more access and prestige. You can also use configurable tech parts to build factories and go full industry mode.
It has a lot of quality of life stuff to keep things from getting boring. You can catch and sell legendary fish. Try your luck with crates. Sell items in the server shop or make your own shop. You can take jobs and get paid for playing while leveling them up and you can work on your McMMO too. They also just added around 25 quests and it is new and being tested with more planned later.
