This is a work in progress Minecraft server based on Attack on Titan with a permadeath twist. When you die you are done so every move feels really intense.
The server is built around heavy lore so it is not just random fighting. You are supposed to be part of a story and your choices matter a lot since there are no extra lives.
Teamwork is super important here. You need to rely on other players and use your survival skills to stay alive. If you run around solo you will probably not last long.
The owners want to start things when they have at least 80 players so it can feel alive and full. If you like risky hardcore gameplay and story driven worlds this server is made for you.

Foggy Willows is a server for people who really want true vanilla Minecraft. It runs on the normal minecraft server jar. There are no datapacks and no plugins. It is always updated to the latest stable vanilla version.
The world is hard mode. There is no world border and no teleport or sethome. You have to walk or build your own nether roads. There are no donations so there is no pay to win stuff.
This server is pretty simple. There is no big spawn and no walls of text to read. You just join and start playing. You can build what you want and play how you want. If there are social problems players are expected to sort it out themselves.
Technical players are welcome here because it is pure vanilla and self hosted on a machine just for the server. It is a good place if you like all the weird quirks and challenges of real vanilla and do not want extra features.

Ironbark SMP is a semi vanilla survival server based in OCE and it is in early access right now. The server wants to feel like a modern survival world with high tension and real progression and no pay to win stuff at all.
It uses mcMMO and custom deathbans so every death matters a lot. Your first deathban starts at one hour and it doubles every time you die and there is a monthly global reset. If you manage to survive long enough the next increase can get cut in half so staying alive is actually a big deal.
There is a food and survival rework too. Mushroom stew heals more hearts and cake gives absorption hearts for a while plus resistance and then it has a cooldown. Totems are disabled so you cannot just spam totems to stay alive.
Ranks are based only on playtime and they are purely cosmetic. There are no gameplay advantages from ranks so everyone has the same chance to survive. The server is looking for more mature players who like a challenge and who enjoy working together and playing smart instead of just rushing everything.

Shattercraft is a vanilla survival server that feels really tense and serious. It is made for players who like PvP and factions that are not easy or disposable.
The world is almost fully free. You can fight anyone almost anywhere. You can make alliances and then betray them. You can steal and start wars and all that becomes the history of the server. There are no scripted events and no forced progress. Players decide everything.

This is a modded VR only survival server built around the Create mod. The big twist is that water does not regenerate so every decision about machines and power actually matters a lot.
You have to plan out water for giant steam engines and for processing ores. Usual renewable power tricks are not very useful so you really think harder about every build. It feels like real survival again and not just another easy factory world.
The server is adventure focused so it is not just a quiet building sandbox. There is exploration and real challenges. People are encouraged to talk and cooperate instead of running off thousands of blocks away and hiding.

This is a brand new hardcore vanilla style SMP that just opened and it feels really fresh. The world is less than a week old so you are not super behind yet.
It runs on the newest Minecraft update with stuff like copper golems spears and horses that can swim. The server is very close to true vanilla with only minimal plugins. There are no ranks and no pay to win so everyone has the same chance to survive.
This server is hardcore so when you die you get tempbanned instead of just respawning. That makes every fight and every cave run feel scary and fun. There is a large world border so everyone still feels like they are in the same world and not a million blocks apart.

I found this server called Ultimate Hardcore and it is actually scary to play.
