The server lets you go on the nether roof and sleep is shared so when about a quarter of the players are in bed the night gets skipped. There is also a command to turn phantom spawns on or off for yourself if you hate those things. Respawn radius around spawn is increased so deaths feel less cramped.

There is newer terrain too but you have to explore pretty far to see it. The server always runs the latest Minecraft snapshot so you get new features early.
