When I joined there were usually a bunch of people online at different times so it did not feel empty at all.

If you want your hearts back you have to craft a Heart Crystal with an echo shard and a diamond block. Using a Heart Crystal gives you one heart and you can even go above ten hearts all the way to twenty. The extra hearts are temporary so when you take damage they disappear first.
