I have been watching this upcoming server and it looks pretty promising. It got delayed a few times but it sounds like it is finally finished. They are just waiting on the server host to fix something before it goes live in a couple days.
From what the devs have shown the server is a modded survival RPG with gear progression. It has custom gear and custom bosses. People are hanging out in the community and getting ready for launch and it seems like a good place if you want to start fresh with everyone else.

WhimsyWillow is a small community focused Minecraft server and Season 3 is live with a modded setup. The mods were picked by the community so it feels like everyone had a say.
The world has tons to explore with over 100 biomes using Biomes O Plenty and Terratonic plus lots of structures. It also has the Create mod so you can build machines and set up big projects as long as it stays reasonable.
There is a BlueMaps world map so you can look around the world. Progression is made more fun with more ores and new tools and weapons.
Spawn is kept looking nice and there is a shop district with custom player shops that can sell anything they want. The server also tries to run events and they always want suggestions to keep things fair balanced and enjoyable.

Gilded Abyss is a modded SMP that is starting up Season 2 on February 7th at 6:30 PM. This season is going for a medieval era vibe and it is meant to feel like a story that builds over time.
When you join you will slowly get placed into one of two groups. Both sides get daily tasks as the server keeps moving forward. The End stays closed at first and it opens after one full week then there is an event.
The world is built for exploring with extra biomes from Biomes o Plenty and Terralith. There are special items you can get in certain ways and you can pick an origin race in game to match your play style. There are also custom bosses for players who want tougher fights.
The Create mod is included so people can build machines and automate stuff as long as it stays reasonable. They also want players to send suggestions and they plan to run lots of events once the season begins.
