There are weekly mayor elections. Any citizen can run a one person campaign and explain why they should be in charge. The mayor is not just for show. They can add or remove laws from an official law book and even make laws that affect certain players to keep things interesting. The server uses a custom currency called resin bricks. The government controls the only Creaking Heart and releases resin bricks through a central bank to keep the economy stable. The Pale Garden is turned off but pale oak saplings will still be given out so people can build with that wood type.
