FolksMC is a tight knit survival server that has been running since August last year and it has a real community vibe. They even keep a history of what has happened so far so it feels like the world has stories.
It plays like a semi vanilla SMP but with factions. You can join a team make your own or just live solo as a nomad. There are wars too but the groups have to agree on the war rules before it starts so it stays fun.
There are a few helpful plugins like two set homes plus spawn. You also get gravestones so your stuff is safer after you die. There is woodcutting sit and SimpleVC for voice chat.
