PrestigiousMC is a Java server where you can play Towny or just live out in survival and build your own place. There is a random teleporter so finding open land feels way easier.
It has self serve protection so you can lock doors and chests with a simple key item. If you forget to protect something and get griefed staff can help fix it.
There are custom mobs plus 3 world bosses with unique drops like speed boost gear a shield that gives bonus health and collectable chat tags. If you want a bigger challenge you can go into the Labyrinth dungeon for better rewards.
Keep inventory is on so dying does not delete your hard work. The economy feels active since you can pick a job for money or run a player shop.
There is also a skill system where you level up for extra powers and try to climb the skills leaderboard. The rules are simple no griefing no cheating respect players and no discrimination or bullying.

Minemist is a small community SMP I found that is hosted in Sydney Australia so it is made for Oceania players who are tired of high ping. It runs Java 1.21.11 and it opened on November 25th 2025 so it still feels new and everyone is starting fresh.
The whole vibe is Towny with towns and micro communities plus war and geopolitics. The world is bordered and there is a server story too. There is a strange server entity called Misty who watches everything and shows up in different forms while keeping the server running.
Progression is a big deal here. Jobs help you grow and there is a culture system with progression ranks. Enchantments are not just easy villager shopping because villagers do not provide enchanted books. You have to craft vanilla enchantments with culture tablets or use the enchanting table or loot them from the world. Mending takes work and endgame gear is slowed so when someone is fully geared it actually means something.
There are also custom enchantments for extra combat power. It has chest locks plus an auction house player warps and player vaults. War is a thing but it is not meant to be a heavy griefing server and it sounds pretty relaxed.

CaliCraft is a player run server based out of California where the whole point is that players can shape what happens. Every two weeks everyone elects an Emperor and that person can actually change a lot. They can add or remove plugins across gamemodes and make laws and even imprison people. If you get marked as a fugitive you can end up spawning in prison when you die or get dragged back in handcuffs if someone catches you.
The server has a lobby so you can jump into different gamemodes fast. There is Modded Survival with custom enchantments and skills and jobs and an auction house economy. It also has custom dungeons and vote crates with strong gear and it is a claim world with a kingdom run by the Emperor.
There is also Vanilla Survival with quests and chest sorting and daily rewards. There is Skyblock with classic island play plus addons. There is a Cobblemon mode where you catch train and battle Pokemon inside Minecraft and it runs on a separate Fabric server so you need the Cobblemon modpack installed.
They also use a custom resource pack with unique mobs and animals and elites plus dungeon bosses with special drops. Versions supported are 1.17.1 to 1.21.10 and it works on Java and Bedrock.

Adrift SMP is a semi vanilla survival server that feels like it is run for the players. It is meant to stay consistent so people can settle in and not worry about the server suddenly changing direction.
PvP is toggleable so you can chill and build or you can fight when you want. There is also land claim so your builds can stay safe.
The economy is player driven with chest shops. You can also do jobs and quests. There are playtime rewards and ranks too.

People build huge cities or hide out underground and play it safe. You can get rich through the economy and set up player run shops plus jobs and skills.
A big part of the server is diplomacy and war. Nations can make alliances or start conflicts depending on what players want. You can also make groups like corporations agencies and militias.
The staff seems active and they listen to suggestions. The server also uses plugins like Brewery and Minions and they plan to add more later.

The community is active across AU EU and US timezones. At busy times it can hit around 20 players so it does not feel empty.
You can claim land with Towny and grow a town with other players. It also has jobs mcmmo and in game ranking plus dynmap. There are player warps player shops and a sell only server shop. It runs on 1.21.x and it also supports Bedrock on a separate port.

I found an SMP that just expanded the world size from 6000 by 6000 to 9000 by 9000. There is a server wide medieval castle event happening right now so it feels like everyone has something to work on together.
It is not pure vanilla. It has player jobs plus a shop and economy. There are player warps and player chest shops so trading and traveling is a big part of the server.
They also built a brand new spawn and switched server locations. Bedrock players can join too.

Realm of Thrones is a small crossplay SMP where players build kingdoms and try to grow into the top empire. It is all about civilization building and community stuff where you can choose peace or you can choose PvP and conquest.
You level up your kingdom over time and rise in ranks using in game money and play time. People can make alliances and use peaceful nations for trade then plan wars against rivals.
There are configurable tech components so you can build factories and try to become a big industry player. It also has lots of quality of life changes so it stays busy with things like legendary fishing you can sell and crates you can test your luck with.
There is a server shop plus player shops and a jobs system that pays you for playing while you level each job. You can also level up McMMO and try new quests since a bunch just launched and more is planned later.

Loop de Loop is a fresh Towny server with a Vanilla plus style. It keeps things close to normal survival but adds extra systems to make it feel more fun as it grows.
Players get useful commands like teleport requests and homes and a back command. Land can be claimed so you can protect your builds and towns use the usual Towny tools.
McMMO is on so your skills level up while you play and higher levels unlock special abilities like instant mining. The economy uses a currency called Loops and you can earn it from jobs selling items voting and other basic server stuff.
There is a big shop with lots of items and you can sell items back for a percent. There is also an auction house so you can list your own items and choose the price.
Custom enchantments are included with a menu where you spend XP levels to get enchanted books. Loot crates exist but the keys are earned from voting and daily logins and not real money. The server is new so some planned features are still being worked on and they are taking suggestions.
