Bases can be reinforced with a plugin so raids are harder and defense matters. Some crops only grow in certain biomes so people have to trade and travel. Crops keep growing even if you are offline and you can speed it up with fertilizer.
Mining is different too since ores spawn as you mine and your pickaxe and biome and Y level changes the rates. Some resources only show up in certain regions so you cannot get everything in one spot.
There are snitches that can alert you when someone enters your land and you can track what they do. If someone causes trouble players can use ExilePearls to send criminals to the nether.
