Mincecef SMP is a survival server that feels like classic Minecraft. It is mostly vanilla and the server does not hold your hand. There are no easy commands like shop or tpa so you have to travel and trade the old school way.
The world is huge and the border was expanded from 50k by 50k to 300k by 300k. The nether and end also got bigger so there is a lot of loot and land for bases and big projects. There are no world resets so your builds and memories stay.
The server is pretty new and has around eight active players. The community feels friendly and tight and they like building redstone and pvp. You can use voice chat which makes teamwork and trash talk more fun.

This is a really old Minecraft server that has been running since 2011 and the world is not getting reset. You can tell they care more about the history of the map than anything else.
The server is semi vanilla and feels really old school. There is no teleporting so no tpa and no home command and no warp. You actually have to walk everywhere and that makes travel and exploring feel kind of intense.
The rules are pretty simple. You can raid other players and you can grief and you can kill people. Hacking is not allowed though so it is still fair if you play legit.

This is a new vanilla plus style SMP server with a simple chill vibe. It runs survival with some quality of life plugins so it feels close to normal Minecraft but just a bit smoother.

So I found this server called GeoSMP and it is a new Vanilla Earth style world. The map is based on Earth and you can make your own towns and build up with other people.
The server is pretty fresh so you can get a nice start and not feel super behind everyone else. It feels really balanced and not pay to win and that makes it more fun to just play and explore.
The owner and staff worked really hard on it and you can kind of tell when you run around and see how everything is set up. They are trying to grow the community and want players of all ages to join and hang out.

This is a modded Minecraft server running 1.20.1 with a huge list of mods and it is mostly about adventure and exploration.

Halcyon is a medieval style Lands PvP server that feels like old school survival but on the newest Minecraft version. It was started by a postgraduate medievalist and you can tell they really care about the atmosphere.
The world is custom made with big unique biomes. There is no teleportation so travel actually matters. Players build long roads waystations and even secret underground railways. Echelon is a custom survival server that tries to stay simple and familiar. It does not need any mods or special client stuff so you just join with normal Minecraft and play. The gameplay is meant to feel like regular survival but smoother and cleaner.
A lot of the server is built around the players. There is a suggestion system in game where you can type a command and write your ideas in a book. The staff looks at these and uses them to improve the server over time.
