I found this server called TFMC and it is a vanilla Minecraft roleplay server that really wants your choices to matter. You do not need any mods to join. You just hop in and start roleplaying and what you do can change the world.
The theme is a mix of medieval fantasy and steampunk which is pretty cool. The world is fresh and has nations politics and even war between them. You can pick different professions like Smith Alchemist Engineer Miner and more so your character actually has a job.
There are custom mobs and dungeons plus special gear and spells and magic so it feels more like an RPG. The server has MMO style progression with big world events and lore that keeps evolving over time. A lot of the systems are built for roleplay and they can have real consequences for your character and the world.
One of the wildest things is the custom vehicle plugin. You can use planes ships trains and more stuff that you do not usually see in Minecraft. They also use a custom resource pack but it still works with vanilla.
The community is described as welcoming friendly and diverse so it seems like a good place if you like serious roleplay and storytelling in Minecraft.

GildedAbyss is a new modded SMP that is all about the community and how everyone interacts with the world. Season 1 is not open yet and they want more players before it starts so you can help shape how the server will feel.
The world has tons of biomes because it uses Biomes o Plenty and Terralith so exploring actually feels fresh. There are special items you can get with certain methods and there are more ores that make progression feel different with new tools and weapons.
One of the coolest things is Ancestral Archetypes. You can pick a sub race in game and use its abilities to your advantage. There is also the Create mod so you can build all kinds of machines as long as they are reasonable.
The owner really wants suggestions and plans to add more stuff before the server officially opens. There will be a lot of events once the season begins and the goal is to make everything fun for the players.
You get whitelisted with a ticket system where you talk to the owner or a moderator. If they think you are a good fit you get added and can join in on the start of Season 1.

This server is called The Oasis and it is all about a big civilization style event.
The community is really active and has a lot of different people who like to play together and make stories. They already finished season 1 which had a bunch of lore and funny events.
Now they are getting ready for season 2 and they want more players to join in. The idea is that more people makes the whole civilization thing way cooler and more chaotic in a good way.

This server is called CollideCraft Season 3 Time Zero and it feels really intense. You crash in a broken world and nothing is easy at all. The dimension is messed up space is tight and resources are hard to find so you actually have to fight to survive.
It is a semi vanilla SMP with lite lore so it still feels like normal Minecraft but the story and world are a little twisted. Time does not feel right and the environment is unstable so you always feel a bit on edge.
There is lifesteal so every fight actually matters. People can form alliances and factions so you never know who you can really trust. Players also get to choose some of the plugins so the community helps shape how the server plays.
They run frequent events and the owner says there is more hidden under the surface so it sounds like you discover stuff as you go. It really feels like a place where survival is earned not just given.
Season 3 Time Zero launches on December 22 and you can join early to secure a whitelist spot before it fills up.

Dominion SMP is a survival server that is built to be a forever world and not a seasonal reset map. The idea is that players can build bases and megabases and they will stay for years instead of getting wiped.
The server is inspired by Hermitcraft and is lightly modded but it still feels like vanilla. It has things like a player run shopping district and community projects so people actually play together instead of just hiding in their own holes.
There are regular community events and one big event is happening this weekend where new members start together and can meet veteran players. The event includes games like tennis and basketball plus a reward for the winner and lots of chaos and laughs.
