I found a hardcore SMP that is trying to feel like those Minecraft civilization videos but it runs all the time and it is not just a one time event.
It is invite only and the only way new people get in is if someone already inside invites them. This is meant to keep the community active and help avoid trolls.
The server has secret tweaks and mechanics and they do not give you guides. You are supposed to figure things out yourself which makes paying attention really matter.
There is also a built in clan and family system so you do not just show up alone in a hardcore world. You join as part of a group and you end up being part of an ongoing story.
