Railcraft is a Minecraft server that feels like a real social experiment.

There are no claim plugins and no magic shop system and no admins fixing what happens. Groups have to organize or fail. They mine build trade and fight under real limits.
Travel is mostly by rail so players actually build rail lines. There are no elytras no ender chests and no automatic farms. There is proximity voice chat so talking with people near you really matters.
The server does not open right away. It starts only when there are enough players accepted in every ideology so things feel balanced at the beginning.
There is no central state and no promise that things will be fair. Some groups might grow strong and some might split or collapse.
It is whitelist only and you must apply. The main language is Spanish but basic English is ok.
If you want a chill relaxed SMP this server is not for you. It is for people who want real friction and want to see what happens when ideas hit real limits.

Two Modded Servers Host Experiment
I found a pair of modded servers that are running as a little host experiment. Both servers have the same specs and they are both in US West. They run on Ryzen 9900X or equivalent CPUs with 16GB RAM each and 32 slots. The worlds are pregenerated out to around 10k blocks in every direction.
There are two choices to play on. One server is All The Mods 10 on modpack version v5.4. The other server is Homestead A Cozy Survival Experience on modpack version v1.2.9.4.
There is no whitelist so you can just join. The area around spawn is claimed by the server to help stop big griefs. This experiment is planned to run about 2 months then the servers might close unless people really want them to stay. Golden Nations is a semi vanilla server that is all about geopolitics and players running the world. People make nations and leaders can set rules like constitutions then they try to survive with diplomacy or war.
The economy is player driven so trading and control of resources really matters. Players can sell basic stuff like food crops and ores but the rest depends on what players make and trade.
War is serious here. If you die in an official war you get banned for 24 hours and your character resets. That makes every fight feel risky and nations have to plan.
The world is tight at 5000 by 5000 so neighbors will run into each other fast. There are no elytras and no villagers so travel is slower and you cannot just farm infinite trades. PurpleSMP is a small survival server that feels simple but still polished. It is mainly PVE and the wildest thing here is the mcMMO skills so grinding stuff actually feels good.
The economy is made by players and there is no server currency. You can claim land to protect your builds and everyone gets a personal vault for more storage.
PvP is off by default but you can toggle it if you want to mess around with friends. The server also has a live map you can view like a big web map.
The staff takes safety seriously. Blocks are logged and staff can restore inventories if something goes wrong because of rule breaking. There is also an anti cheat that alerts staff fast.

I found a server called Lumenor SMP and it tries to do stuff different from a lot of other servers. The community is said to be polite and the staff helps fast. Even when staff is not around people in chat are supposed to help you.
It runs on the latest version 1.21.11 and it also lets in 1.21.4+ players with ViaVersion. It supports Java Bedrock and even cracked so you can join from more places.
The server has a role system so peaceful players can do their thing and the chaos players can fight and grief. There is also a trading style shop where players put items up and trade like villager trades.
The world is described as custom vanilla with custom biomes and big structures like ancient temples. There is an arena for PvP where you can fight without losing your items because keep inventory is only on in the arena. I found this political survival server launching on 1.21.1 and it uses a full Europe map. The whole point is player conflict and control and who ends up running what.
There is no scripted roleplay and there are no admin made nations. Players make the nations and cities and empires and players can also wipe them out.
Wars are for land and resources and dominance and it has real consequences. People can do diplomacy and alliances then betray each other and even push propaganda.
You can build capitals and borders and big fortifications. Trade routes and the economy matter since the server is player driven.
