So I found this server called LegacyMC and it is a full vanilla anarchy world. There are no rules and no pay to win and no special gameplay plugins. It feels like classic survival where everything is wild and nothing is protected.
The server started in June 2025 so the map is still pretty fresh and people are just starting to leave their mark. There are no land claims and no teleport commands and the admins do not interfere. Whatever you build or destroy or conquer stays like that and it is totally up to the players.
The server runs on dedicated hardware in Australia so it is made for players in Australia and New Zealand who want low lag. There is no monetisation at all and the costs are already covered so nobody begs for donations or sells ranks.

ArchiveNetwork is a GensSMP server that just started a fresh new season. It runs on versions 1.20 to 1.21.x so most newer clients can join.
The world has custom generation so it is not the same old vanilla map. There are over 200 custom structures to explore so you can wander around and find cool places while you grind.
The server uses the NextGens plugin so generators are a big part of how you progress. There are keys lootboxes and airdrops that drop gear and rewards so it feels like you are always chasing the next upgrade.
You can get OP OmniTool weapons and other custom gear so combat and mining feel really strong. The community is active and the server gets regular updates so it does not feel dead.

Aegea is a semi vanilla survival server with a simple economy and ranks. It uses Spigot and a few plugins to make life easier but it still feels close to normal Minecraft.
You can use commands like help back and sethome to get around. There is tpa and tpahere so you can teleport to other players. You can make trade signs to sell items for your own price and you can use sell and sell hand to make money. You can lock chests and doors and staff can rollback grief with CoreProtect. There is also rtp so you can randomly teleport into the wild. The map is new so there is space to build.
The rank system is based on playtime. Everyone starts as Guest and then becomes Peasant which is the basic rank with five sethomes. After that you can work your way up to Artisan and Noble for more commands and more homes. Once a month there is an election for the highest player rank called Premier. The winner is Premier for one month until the next vote.
Players can also join factions that are called teams. Teams share a name a home and warps so you can build together under one banner.
The rules are pretty simple. No griefing no stealing and no pvp unless everyone agrees. No spamming no hacks and no toxicity. The goal is to have fun and build a close community over time.

I found this Minecraft server called Kingdoms and it is all about semi vanilla roleplay. It runs on version 1.21.10 and it is whitelisted so you have to apply before you can join. The whole idea is player driven politics and big geopolitical stories between different players.
On this server you can create your own kingdom using a custom mod. You can change how your name looks in the tab list and in chat so you can really act like a new character. People make alliances and enemies and build up power over time.
The server has a 24 hour ban if you die in PVP. That makes every fight feel scary and important because if you lose you are gone for a whole day. There is also voice chat so talking and roleplaying with others feels more real.

Jalacraft is a chill survival world that is made for people who like to create content and tell stories. It is an SMP that feels like a long term project and not just a quick map.
The server has a fully custom SMP setup with player driven storylines. There are events lore challenges and collabs so it feels like a world that is always moving forward when people are online.
They want players who are 16 or older and who are comfortable talking with a simple voice mod. You should be at least somewhat active and you need to be ok with people recording and streaming on things like YouTube TikTok and Twitch.
