MinedHype is a friendly long term public survival server that has been run by the same owner for 6 years. It started back in 1.14 and it has had over 19400 unique players join.
It feels mostly vanilla and it runs on Minecraft 1.21.11. There is no pay to win and there is no money economy plugin so trading is done with player run shops using item trades.
You can protect your builds with claims and CoreProtect is used to help protect the server too. Grief is allowed if you did not claim the area so you should claim your stuff.
The Overworld and Nether are meant to stay long term and they will not be reset. There is no set world border or spawn and players spawn randomly within the first 40k blocks. You can also use rtp to go within 50k blocks and then set a home.
Java and Bedrock players can play together. There is a web map you can use and chat reports are disabled. There are free events with prizes and a public shopping district where people can apply for a shop.

Waychest Journeys: Solo Start, Shared World
Waychest is a PvE survival server on Java 1.21.11 that feels like you start in your own quiet world. You and your friends begin in a Journey with a random spawn point and it can seem like nobody else is around.
As you explore more you learn the whole place is one shared survival world. Other Journeys are out there doing their own thing and you can eventually cross paths.
The big hook is the Waychests. These special chests can connect across the world and push you to travel farther and find what other players left behind. Later you can craft and place your own to guide the next Journey toward your builds.

Realm of Thrones is a crossplay SMP that feels like it is all about building civilizations and making a real community. People make kingdoms and try to level them up over time. You can go for power and conquest or you can stay peaceful and become a trade partner and ally.
It has a ranking system that goes up with in game money and your play time. As you rise you get more access and more prestige. It pushes you to keep playing and growing your nation.
There are configurable tech style parts so players can set up factories and try to become a big industry leader. The server also adds a bunch of quality of life stuff so it does not feel boring.
There is stuff like legendary fishing you can sell and crates you can test your luck with. You can use the server shop or make your own shop. You can also take jobs and get paid for playing while leveling them up. McMMO leveling is part of the grind too. I found Broomstix SMP and it is a hard difficulty server that works for both Java and Bedrock players. It runs on the latest version with backwards compatibility so people can still get in.
The server has custom enchantments and a cool trick where you can put a lead on mobs to teleport them. There is land claiming with ProtectionStones and the rules say no grief so your builds can stay safe.
There is a bartering economy system plus server shops and a public market. You can also use homes and private messaging and player teleport commands so it is easy to meet up.
PvP is mostly in an exclusive main arena and you keep inventory there. Random teleport is allowed in the overworld and every Sunday you get free fly in the overworld.

I found a modded server called Iperios that runs on All the Mods 10 version 5.5. The main idea is nations where players can make their own group with a government plus laws and ranks.
If you do not want to start your own nation you can join one that already exists. To get in you join their Discord and ask for whitelist then check the new player info channel for what to do next.
