Malgazar SMP is a chill survival server where people are not supposed to trash your builds. It is meant to feel friendly and pretty active most days. It runs on Purpur and it is hosted in the UK.
The rules are focused on keeping stuff fair and calm. No griefing no stealing no scamming no slurs and no drama. PvP is only if both people agree and there is also no x ray no cheats no duping and no using seed maps. If you break rules you can get locked in a cage for a set time or banned.
It has quality of life stuff like keep inventory and veinminer. Explosions do not destroy blocks. There is also mcmmo for skill rankings and there is player to player teleport. Fishing has extra rare loot drops too.

I found LanderYT SMP and it is a semi vanilla survival server with a world that is about 7 months old. The server resets yearly so it stays fresh but still feels like a real long term place.
It is inspired by Hermitcraft so griefing and killing are not tolerated. People are expected to play nice and build up the world together.
There are small tweaks that still keep the gameplay close to vanilla. There is a custom texture pack with things like shop permits plus cosmetic hats and weapons that do not add extra power.
Teleporting is kept simple since the only command is /spawn and it is only in the overworld. This makes players build roads and highways more.
Some Hermitcraft style datapacks are used like single player sleep plus player heads and armor statues. Chat can also connect between Discord and Minecraft.

I found a new Towny server called GamerHub Towny that started out for streaming and now they are trying to grow it into a bigger community.
The server feels pretty chill and they do not allow griefing or stealing. People are welcoming and ready to help and most players are in the US.
It has ingame ranking that uses ingame money. You also get Dynmap plus player warps and player shops. There is a sell only server shop too.
You can do Jobs and MCMMO. It usually has a few players on but it gets way more active when the owner streams and it can hit 12 or more online.

MineRealm is a public SMP server that has been online since 2010 and a ton of players have joined over the years. It feels like a long term world where people actually stick around and know each other.
The map is kept smaller and it slowly expands and new land generates on the latest Minecraft version. Builds are meant to stay because there are no world resets.
It is 100 percent legit survival with no pay to win and no item spawning. There is grief protection using CoreProtect plus a classic plot system so your stuff can stay safe.

MazecraftMC is a semi vanilla survival server that keeps the normal Minecraft feel but adds some quality of life stuff.
It is in Season 2 right now and this season runs until June. The world is already made and the economy is active so you can join in and still have time to build and get known before Season 3.
It supports Java and Bedrock crossplay. The community is small and active most of the day and it is also no pay to win.
