New Dawn SMP is a long term vanilla survival server that feels really chill but also serious about builds. The world is planned to last around 8 to 12 months so you actually get time to finish a megabase or a full town.

Halcyon is a lands PvP server that tries to feel like an old school medieval world. It runs on a handmade custom map and aims for a tough survival style where progression is slow and careful.
The server is based in Australia but there are players from Europe the Americas and Asia. There are usually between 10 and 30 people online so the world feels active without being too crowded.
Travel is a huge part of the game. There is no teleportation so players ride and walk everywhere and that has made roads waystations and secret underground rail lines really important. Biomes are large and very different and some crops and saplings only grow in certain places so trading between regions actually matters.
The gameplay rules are made to cut down on meta play and automation and reward teamwork and creativity. Success comes from building strong towns and castles making smart trade deals and working with other players instead of just grinding exploits.

BumCraft Reborn is a small modded SMP that is trying to grow into a real community. It runs on a custom modpack that feels like a big kitchen sink but it leans a lot into fantasy stuff. It is mostly PVE and meant for people who like to chill and survive together.
The server uses a very light roleplay style with different status ranks. There are Barons and Baronesses who control big chunks of land. There are Town Leaders who are like mayors. There are Honored Villagers who are trusted players with homes. There are Ratlings who wander around or live in the dark. And there is The Lowest which is a rank you probably do not want.

Paragon SMP is an anarchy style world but it is not full chaos. You can steal from people and do some light griefing but the idea is not to blow everything up and ruin the whole map. It feels more like sneaky survival than pure destruction.
The server uses Simple Voice Chat and you actually need it if you want to join. That means most people talk instead of just typing. It makes teaming up or betraying people way more intense.
There are no extra gameplay mods besides performance stuff so it still feels like normal Minecraft. Keep inventory is off so dying actually matters and makes every fight risky.
The world is 10,000 by 10,000 so it is not infinite and players will eventually run into each other. With around 50 player slots it can get busy but still feel like a small community. The server is also LGBTQ friendly so everyone can feel safe playing.
To join you have to go through a whitelist application and then wait a bit to get accepted. It gives off the vibe of a semi anarchy server where trust is rare but the community still has some respect for each other.
