This server is called Eden and it is a wild social experiment. The owner wanted to see what happens to Minecraft when you remove infinite resources.
On Eden mobs do not drop xp so you cannot just make a mob farm and be done. To enchant gear or repair tools you have to build factories. These are big multi block builds that eat crops and ores and then give you xp and refined stuff.
Resources are not the same everywhere. Some biomes have certain crops and ores and others do not. You cannot just dig a hole and make one base that does everything. You have to find neighbors and trade so your factories and supply chains keep running.
The server uses a reinforcement system for protection. You do not claim land with a simple command. You reinforce each block with stone or iron or diamond. If you cannot afford to reinforce it then you probably cannot keep it safe.
Because of this players stopped living in dirt huts. They build strong industrial city states instead. The starter stone age is over and now nations compete for the resources to fuel their big industrial setups.
The world does not reset so everything you build and every nation you make can last. There is still room for new nations merchants and factory players who want to jump into this age of industry.
