You kill the Ender Dragon to get the egg then whoever holds it can place it in the overworld and start earning Shards and money every 10 minutes. The longer it stays with you and your team the bigger the payout so people really try to lock it down.
It never stays safe for long because everyone can see the egg location on their live BlueMap and players can buy a tracking compass that points right to it.
