There are no land claims so you can play freely with friends and the world stays open. The server uses a raw gold item economy and players run a shopping district for trading.
The quality of life stuff is kept small with things like spawn sethome and night skip. Keep inventory is off so deaths actually matter.
Staff are not trying to control everything and mostly step in for cheating or griefing. The community is active and people hang out and talk together.
Rules are strict about no hacks and no x ray and no removing lava fog. Do not mess with other players builds or entities without permission and keep some space between bases. Universal duping is not allowed but a few single item dupes like rails and string are allowed. Hate speech and language that pushes real world violence is not allowed.

CaliCraft is a player run Minecraft server where the community shapes what happens. Every two weeks players elect an Emperor and that person can actually change the server. They can add or remove plugins across any gamemode make laws and even imprison people including staff.
If you get marked as a fugitive you can end up spawning in prison when you die. You can also get dragged in handcuffs if you get caught. The Emperor has to follow a Constitution but they can make temporary laws during their reign. Some laws can become permanent through a 3 day Discord poll.
There is a lobby first and it helps you jump into different gamemodes fast. The server supports versions 1.17.1 to 1.21.10 and it supports both Java and Bedrock.

It is built by a postgraduate medievalist and it sticks to an old school survival style while still running on vanilla Minecraft 1.21.11. The server is based in Australia but people play from Europe the Americas and Asia and it usually has 10 to 30 players on at a time.
The world is handmade and the rules are set up to make the game harder and slower. It is not about doing the best meta tricks.
