It has land claims so your builds and items can stay safe. The world border is huge at 60 million blocks so there is a lot of space to explore and settle.
PvP is allowed and there is a spot at spawn where keep inventory is on. Outside of claims it is real survival PvP without keep inventory. It keeps a mostly vanilla feel but adds helpful commands like home tp and wild so getting around is easier.
I found Taerel Network and it is a modded SMP that leans hard into a dark fantasy feel. It has lore about finding a sealed gate and stepping into a strange portal place with an azure sky. From there you head into a colorful world that still feels risky and unknown.
The server runs custom modpacks and the biomes can be different depending on the server. The world is meant for exploring and settling in, with a spooky night vibe and weird sounds out in the dark. The staff is said to be friendly and active and the owner is around and willing to help.
The big thing is there are no resets so the map is planned to stay permanently. It is whitelisted so you have to get approved before you can join.
Solarion SMP is a whitelisted Java survival server for players who are 18 and up. It is inspired by Hermitcraft and it is built for long term play with a community that sticks around.
Season 7 started on 01/09/2026 so it is a fresh world with lots left to explore. Seasons usually run 6 to 8 months so people have time for mega builds farms and big projects.
The vibe is community driven with collaborations shared builds and server events like ice boat racing and treasure hunts. There are also player made minigames plus parkour and puzzles and community districts.

I found RefinedVanilla and it is a true vanilla anarchy server with basically no rules except no hacked clients. You can build destroy explore and just do whatever you want in a world that stays close to how Mojang intended.
It runs on Fabric instead of Paper or Folia so stuff like redstone TNT pistons and tick timing act like single player. That makes it feel right for technical players who care about real vanilla behavior.
They also have a custom Fabric fork with multithreading to help it handle higher player counts. The server can change simulation distance mobcaps and render distance to keep it running smooth.
Nether roof is enabled. Chunk trailing is patched. Portal chunkloaders can work but they unload when there are no nearby players in either dimension.
